Sensei Calvert Lum - 2nd degree black belt jiu-jitsu

Sensei Calvert Lum - Nidan (2nd degree black belt

Sensei Calvert (Cal) Lum is a freshly minted 2nd degree Black Belt (Nidan, April 29th, 2017) under Sensei Stephane Dore (Rokudan) in Ninja-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu under the Trident Jiu-Jitsu Fellowship.

Sensei Cal’s first foray in to the martial arts in 1980 is credited to Bruce Lee’s influence and his introduction of the Asian martial arts to the Western world during a time when it was taboo for Asians to teach the martial arts to Westerners. It inspired Sensei Cal to take up Kung Fu in his early teenage years in Vancouver. That was during a time when there was no recognition of development by means of belts (or sashes in Kung Fu) like there is today. Sensei Cal studied Kung Fu for about 5 years and above the hand and feet techniques became proficient in Chinese sword and bo staff. The nunchaku sticks (made famous by Bruce Lee) remains one of Sensei Cal’s favourite weapon.

Years later, the UFC came along and left a lasting impression on him and provoked him to enroll in Jiu-Jitsu in 2007 in St. Albert with Sensei Stephane. The rest is for the history books.

In addition to studying Jiu-Jitsu, you will find Sensei Cal training in Muay Thai kickboxing under Master Dave Ansah. Sensei Cal has been training under Master Dave for about the same length of time as he has with Jiu-Jitsu.
